OHIOPYLE FALLS - YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER
38 MILES FROM SNYDER OF BERLIN

"Yough" rhymes with "rock." Those rocks, which litter the Youghiogheny River, provide some of the best whitewater in the Eastern United States. The river cuts a 1,700-foot-deep gorge through Laurel and Chestnut ridges. Nearby sections drop the river level over 150 feet per mile.

At the tiny town of Ohiopyle, the rushing river drops 20 feet over a wide sandstone ledge. During special events, Ohiopyle Falls is open to thrill-seeking kayakers.

Below the Falls, the natural river continues its swift descent with numerous class III and IV rapids that make for exciting rafting.

Our home of Berlin, Pennsylvania, is a model of small-town America - and indeed, Somerset County is known as "America's County." Since 1947, Snyder of Berlin has been an active member of the community and region, and we are proud to share part of it with you.

WOLF ROCKS - LINN RUN STATE PARK
27 MILES FROM SNYDER OF BERLIN

Westward pioneers called them the "Endless Mountains". We call them beautiful, fun and home.

Wolf Rocks is just one of many sandstone outcrops above 2,500 feet. From many perches along the summit of Laurel Ridge, the skyline of Pittsburgh is visible -- nearly 50 miles away.

More than half of the land along the ridge is public land set aside for conservation. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail twists along the ridge for 70 miles. The trail is thick with Mountain Laurel, Eastern Hemlock and Rhododendron, plus boulders as big as houses.

LOWER HUMBERT COVERED BRIDGE
27 MILES FROM SNYDER OF BERLIN

Say "covered bridge" and some people may think of Vermont (4th most), but of the 900 remaining in the U.S., Pennsylvania has the most at 197. There are 25 of these historic structures in the five counties surrounding our hometown of Berlin, PA. Our snack-loving friends in Ohio have the second most covered bridges, at 125.

The Lower Humbert (Faidley) Bridge was built in 1891 and crosses Laurel Hill Creek in Lower Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County. The two-span, 126-foot-long Burr arch truss is still open to traffic; and who's to say there's not something magic in our land of "kissing bridges"'

BEAM ROCKS - LAUREL RIDGE
22 MILES FROM SNYDER OF BERLIN

Up along the ridges of the Laurel Highlands, an extra hard layer of sandstone folds and buckles to create long vistas and rock cities. Beam Rocks on Laurel Ridge features a 90-foot cliff with cracks and crannies.

Stone blocks, the size of a truck or a house, jumble along the cliff base. It feels just like spelunking (caving exploration) without a roof. The precipices are popular for more daring climbers, too -- with ropes, caribiners, helmets, and chalked hands.

You'll often find other outdoorsy types there enjoying the perfect mix of natural wonders and the active, adventurous, outdoor lifestyle.

Vying with the French to settle land disputes west of the Appalachians, British General John Forbes cut a military road across Pennsylvania in 1758. The final supply depot along the challenging route was established that September as Fort Ligonier. By November, Forbes' forces had ousted the French from the "Forks of the Ohio" and Pittsburgh was born.

Today, the reconstructed fort showcases the eighteenth century with numerous structures and a museum of rare artifacts. The adjacent town is known for its antique & specialty shops in addition to the Fort Ligonier Days festival, held annually in October.
